First of all, let me say that I hadn't played a real tanpura before so I don't have other references to compare this with. I am an ICM enthusiast who has been long using digital versions of tanpura for practice until I finally decided to take the plunge and get a real one.
I had been hesitant on buying one online, especially without getting the chance to test it out. In fact, I've been vacillating back and forth for years --not exaggerating. At last, I decided to go for it and I've never been happier after spending so much money!
The instrument shipment was a little delayed (took 3 weeks to get here), but it doesn't matter, since this thing is a beauty (looks pretty much like the picture).
It arrived well (if not too well :) ) packaged with a nice fiber glass case (think a large guitar case) perfect for lugging this along in my car, and an extra set of strings.
The instrument itself sounds great. In all honestly, the experience doesn't compare to that of any digital versions (I have tried several over the years). Every time I use it, I am learning new things. If you're a moderately serious ICM (Indian Classical Music) enthusiast, I would strongly recommend you get one of these. It's an eye opening experience.
