Male Tanpura
The larger tanpura class, built for the lower scales most men sing, around C to E.
The bigger gourd and longer string length produce the deep, room-filling drone you hear behind classical vocal concerts. These are also the largest instruments we ship, close to five feet in a fitted protective crate, and the shipping weight is already inside the listed price for the USA.
What pitch will it be tuned to? Typically C, C sharp or D. Tell us your Sa when you order and we string and tune to it before it leaves.
Four strings or five? Four is standard. A fifth adds harmonic colour in some traditions. Unless your teacher has asked for five, take four.
What is jawari? The wide curved bridge that turns plain strings into a shimmering drone, with a cotton thread under each string to fine-tune the buzz. It is the soul of the instrument and it needs an expert's hand when it eventually wears.
If you sing higher, see Female Tanpura. If you need something portable, see Tanpuri.
