Mridangam

The mridangam is the heartbeat of Carnatic music.

A double-headed barrel drum played horizontally across the lap, with a permanent black patch on the treble head that gives it its unmistakable ring. The shells are jackfruit wood, as tradition requires and as acoustics reward.
