Naal

The naal is what happens when a dholak goes to tabla school.

A barrel body with properly skinned tabla-style heads, which gives you tabla articulation at folk drum volume. That combination made it the studio favourite for film and light music, because it records beautifully and cuts through a mix without fighting anything.

Who is it for? Bhajan and light-music accompanists, tabla players who need more volume than a tabla gives, and anyone recording who wants a punchy tuned dholak sound.

Is the technique tabla or dholak? In between. Tabla-style fingerwork on the treble head, broader dholak strokes on the bass side. Tabla players adapt to it quickly, which is a large part of the appeal.
