Shehnai
The most auspicious sound in North India, and one of the hardest instruments to play.
The shehnai plays at wedding gates and temple doorways, and Ustad Bismillah Khan carried it from there onto the concert stage. A conical wooden bore, a flared metal bell, and a double reed that gives it a piercing, almost human cry.
How hard is it really? The double reed is the mountain. Expect weeks of practice before clean, steady notes, and expect the first sessions to sound nothing like what you imagined. A teacher, even over video, shortens that enormously.
