Folding (Portable) Harmoniums
A folding harmonium packs into itself. The keyboard drops, the lid closes, and what you are holding is a case with a handle.
We sell a great many of these, and almost always to the same people: musicians who move between homes, classes and programs, players who fly, and anyone without the floor space for a standing instrument. The range here runs from portable kirtan boxes right up to multi-reed scale changers, so folding no longer means compromising on specification.
Does folding hurt the sound? No. The reeds make the sound and the hinge does not touch them. A well-made folding harmonium with good reeds stands beside an equivalent standing model. What you pay is a little extra weight in the case structure, and a little more care when packing.
Can it fly? They are built for it and most fit checked baggage dimensions. Weights are on every product page. Pad it, and check your airline's allowance rather than ours.
The one thing that damages them. Seat the keyboard fully and latch the sides before you pump. Almost every folding harmonium repair we have seen came from pumping with the keyboard half seated. It takes two seconds to check and it will never fail if you do.
Compare with Kirtan Harmoniums if portability matters more than range, or the full Harmoniums range if it does not travel at all.
