Taus

Taus is Persian for peacock, and one look explains the name.

The body is carved into the bird. Attributed by tradition to the time of Guru Hargobind, it is bowed, fretted, and carries sympathetic strings that halo every note. It is larger and deeper than the dilruba that later descended from it, rare in production, and one of the most striking objects we ship.

Is it hard to learn? The fretted neck makes the left hand approachable, much like a sitar. The bow is where the work goes. Kirtan academies increasingly teach it, and the tanti saaz revival has brought it back into gurdwaras.

Taus or dilruba? Portability and depth. The taus is bigger, deeper and the older tradition. The dilruba is lighter, brighter and easier to carry to a class.

Taus or dilruba?
The dilruba is the taus's lighter, more portable descendant, smaller and brighter. The taus is the older, bigger, deeper tradition.
