Ghatam
Yes, it is a clay pot. It is also one of the great percussion instruments of Carnatic music.
Fired with even, percussion-grade walls so that fingers, palms and the heel of the hand pull an astonishing range of tone from its body and mouth. People who search for a real ghatam have usually already heard what a master does with one.
How is it different from an ordinary pot? Purpose-made walls of even thickness and a controlled firing give it a defined pitch and a ringing tone no kitchen vessel has. It is an instrument that happens to be a pot, not the other way round.
Can I tune it? Only slightly. Water inside lowers the pitch a little. You buy a ghatam close to the pitch you need, so tell us your shruti and we will match from the pieces we have.
Will it survive shipping? We crate ghatams heavily padded and our packing record is strong. Inspect on arrival and message us on WhatsApp straight away if the journey was unkind.
