A drone only supports a singer when it sits in their octave, which is the entire reason two size classes exist. These are full concert instruments in the smaller dimensions that speak best at higher pitch: gourd body, four or five strings, jawari bridge.

Can a man use one? If he sings in a higher scale, absolutely. Choose by pitch, never by the label on the collection.

What pitch will it be tuned to?
Commonly G, G sharp or A, but the label describes a size class, not a rule. We tune to whatever Sa you sing.
Can a man use a female tanpura?
If he sings in a higher scale, absolutely. Choose by pitch, never by label.
What is jawari?
The wide curved bridge that turns plain strings into that shimmering drone. A cotton thread under each string fine tunes the buzz. It is the soul of the instrument, and it needs an expert's touch when it eventually wears.
