About Santur

The Santoor is an Indian stringed musical instrument related to the Indian shata tantric Veena of earlier times and resembles the Persian santur. It is mostly used in folk music of Kashmir
The santoor is basically made out of wood. The framework is generally made out of either walnut or maple wood. The top and bottom boards can be either plywood or veneer.
The modified Santoor which Shivkumar Sharma plays has 31 bridges, total of 91 strings. It has got a range of 3 Octaves and chromatic tuning. Santoor is now kept on the lap and played.
Till some years back Santoor was manufactured only in Kashmir but now these expert craftsmen have moved to cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Punjab and Varanasi where they are pursuing the same profession of making Santoor, according to the modifications carried out by Shivkumar Sharma which has become a standardized form of this instrument.
Santoor is a delicate musical instrument and is very sensitive to even light strokes and glides. The strokes are played always on the strings either closer to the bridges or a little away from bridges. Both methods result in producing different tones. Sometimes strokes by one hand can be muffled by the other hand by using the face of the palm just to create variety.
