Pakhawaj is a standard dhrupad instrument. Ancient instrument, it is basically a north Indian version of the Mridangam. Also known by other names as mardal, pakuaj, pakhvaj and mardala is a percussion instrument. It is more popular in North India and is widely used for Kathak and other forms of dances popular in North India like Odissey. The Pakhawaj is favorite percussion instrument for performances of the Dhrupad-style, be it vocal, on Rudra-Veena or on Surbahar.
