About Tanpura

Tanpura is a string instrument of India that helps the singers in maintaining the scale. Tanpura word is derived its name from two words -"Taan - poora"; meaning all the notes are included in the three notes, which are Lower SA, PA and Higher SA. The Tanpura has four strings tuned to the tonic.
The Tanpura is known for its very rich sound. There are three main styles; the Miraj style, the Tanjore style and the small instrumental version called tamburi. Tanpura has a resonator that is generally made of a gourd, but rarely one may find resonators that are made of wood. Tanpura has been seen to be used as solo instrument with singer himself playing the strings. Tanpura helps to add musical component to the singing solo artist.
