About Dilruba

The dilruba is about 200 years old Indian string instrument found throughout the north, central, and east regions of India. In northern India, it is used in religious music and light classical songs.

Dilruba has a medium sized sitar-like neck with about 20 heavy metal frets. It has four core metal bowed strings. The soundboard is a stretched piece of goatskin (similar to what is found on a sarangi).

The Dilruba is mostly used as an accompanying instrument. It is popularly used in Rabindra Sangeet style of singing. However, it has also been used as a solo instrument to interpret Hindustani Classical Music, mostly in the Vishnupur tradition.
