About Dhol

The dhol is a two-sided Indian percussion instrument. The cords hold the heads taut and small rings around the cords provide a mechanism for tightening or loosening for sound effect. The left head has a heavier sound than the right head. The dhol drum is beaten with two slightly curved sticks. One flexible cane stick for the treble and a larger bent wooden stick for the bass end.
The dhol drum consists of a wooden barrel with animal skin or sometimes even synthetic skin that is stretched over its open ends, covering them completely. These skins help in tuning. They can be stretched or loosened with a certain mechanism made up of either interwoven ropes or nuts and bolts. Tightening or loosening the skins alters the pitch of the drum sound. The stretched skin on one of the ends is thicker and produces a deep, low frequency with higher bass effect while the thinner side produces a higher frequency sound. Recent trend has replaced the goat skin treble head with synthetic plastic heads which are fastened with nuts and bolts.
